E Mark Hammerberg, MD

Orthopedic Surgery
Named a “next generation leader in total joint replacement” by Orthopaedics Today, Dr. Hammerberg most recently served as Chief of Adult Reconstruction in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Denver Health. He has also served as an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, his alma mater. Dr. Hammerberg completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Minnesota. He then completed two Fellowships: one in orthopedic trauma at the University of Washington, and one in hip and knee replacement at the Dorr Arthritis Institute in Los Angeles. Dr. Hammerberg has been published in peer-reviewed journals and books, and he has lectured around the world. When it comes to diagnosing and treating orthopedic conditions, Dr. Hammerberg's philosophy is that more can be learned by simply listening to patients and their families than by reviewing any x-ray, clinical note, or laboratory study. The doctor-patient relationship is a two-way dialogue in which both parties learn from each other, and the treatment plan is the result of shared decision-making. Ultimately, any decision for surgery is made by the patient with the help and advice of his or her surgeon. When he’s not in the office, Dr. Hammerberg enjoys outdoor activities including skiing, hiking, camping, and barbeque. His daughter, Tatum, beats him routinely at tennis. His son, Anders, beats him at swimming and comedic acting. And his wife, Xenia, generally beats him at everything else.
Care Philosophy

Dr. Hammerberg believes listening to his patients and their families is most important. The doctor-patient relationship is a two-way dialogue in which both parties learn from each other, and the treatment plan is the result of shared decision-making.
